Disclosure service at the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment, SBU, have looked into the treatment of hypothyroidism. They have looked at studies comparing combination therapy of thyroxine, T4 and synthetic triiodothyronine, T3, with treatment with only synthetic T4.
It is concluded that treatment with T4 should be the first option. About 100 000 people are treated today in Sweden with synthetically produced T4 as Levaxin or Euthyrox. The combination of T4 and synthetic T3 as Liothyronine is used to a small extent.
SBU does not believe in a great deal of knowledge authority
